Former NFL Quarterback the ex-athlete Charged with Assault Charges After Knife Altercation

Ex-professional football player Mark Sanchez has been accused of battery with injury, public intoxication, and illegally entering a car after an early morning incident in the city that resulted in his hospitalization with stab wounds.

Details of the Altercation

Based on an affidavit, the Fox Sports analyst confronted a 69-year-old truck driver at a hotel delivery area. The driver claimed he believed “Sanchez is trying to kill me” and deployed pepper spray to defend himself. When the spray failed to halt the former athlete from advancing on him, the driver reported stabbing Sanchez “two or three times”. Sanchez then allegedly pushed the driver against a dumpster before an expression of surprise came across his face and he “took off”.

Investigators have reviewed video footage of the event. Bystanders reported that Sanchez and the driver filmed each other with their mobile phones during the incident.

Officials stated in the legal document, “Mr Sanchez is seen chasing [the man] and the video shows Mr Sanchez seizing and hurling [the man] towards the wall of the Westin hotel.”

How It Started

The confrontation reportedly started after Sanchez and the trucker argued over a parking spot.

Consequences and Harm

The incident resulted in knife injuries to his torso, while the other man sustained lacerations to his face. The former player was treated in hospital for his injuries, which were non-fatal, before he was arrested on that day. He is due to appear at a court session on Tuesday morning.

Based on the affidavit, Sanchez informed officers “the only thing he recalled was reaching for a window.” He could not recall who stabbed him or where the incident occurred.

Official Response

“This incident was avoidable,” the county attorney commented. “What began as a dispute between a ex-sports star and a senior citizen ought not to have turned into violence or left anyone seriously injured. As with any case, we will adhere to evidence and regulations wherever they lead.”

Career Repercussions

Sanchez was in the city to cover the Colts’ game with the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday afternoon as part of his broadcasting duties. Another former NFL quarterback replaced Sanchez in the booth for Sunday’s game. Fox acknowledged the incident in passing on Sunday’s pregame show, with a host saying: “we are all still trying to wrap our heads around it … our thoughts and prayers are with him, his loved ones and everyone affected”.

He began with the network in recent years and also contributes to FS1 studio programming.

Background

Before his broadcasting career, Sanchez competed for 10 seasons in the NFL with multiple franchises, including the New York Jets, who drafted him early in the annual selection. He later played for the another team and Dallas Cowboys. He retired in July 2019 and shortly thereafter began working with a sports network before transitioning to his current employer.

In his personal life, Sanchez married his wife, Perry, in 2023. The couple shares three children.
