British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of entry passages down to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
